Parasite prevention is an important component of your pet’s regular healthcare. This is exceptionally important as some parasites can be deadly, while others can be transmitted to humans. The parasites that we prevent against include Heartworm, Fleas and Intestinal worms. There are now several easy, all-in-one prevention treatments that can be used to prevent against these parasites.

Heartworm

Heartworm is transmitted via mosquitoes and can be fatal, however it is easily preventable with regular treatments. If your dog has not had prevention for some time, we recommend testing prior to commencing preventative treatments. Given its deadly nature, prevention is much better than cure!

Fleas

Having fleas is a horrible experience for your pet, however they can be much more than just a nuisance. Large infestations can cause anaemia, and some pets are severely allergic to fleas which results in very painful flea allergy dermatitis. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms. There are many effective prevention products available, and based on your lifestyle we can recommend a product.

Once you have a flea infestation, it can be challenging to get under control again, as it requires multimodal treatment, time, and a large commitment from you! You can’t just treat the affected pet – all pets must be treated and there is a large component of environmental treatment. It is much easier to prevent fleas than to treat a flea infestation!

Intestinal worms

Intestinal worms can cause many healthy issues for your pet, however some intestinal worms can be transmitted to humans. The overall incidence of these zoonoses is low, however to safeguard your family’s health it is important to take appropriate preventative measures.

We recommend treating puppies & kittens fortnightly until 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months of age, then every three months for life.

There are many parasite prevention products available, from liquid spot-on treatments, to oral chewable treatments, to a year-long Heartworm Prevention injection. They are all effective, but your pet’s preventative program is tailored specifically to your pet’s lifestyle and needs.
